Study on the Antimicrobial Activity of Volatile Compounds from Ficus microcarpa Leaves

  • In order to study the antimicrobial activity of volatiles from Ficus microcarpa leaves, the absorption solution of volatiles from Ficus microcarpa leaves and abrasives of leaves were used as materials. The antimicrobial activity of volatiles from Ficus microcarpa leaves against Staphylococcus aureus was tested by plate count method and coating sealing method. The effective antimicrobial components in leaf abrasives were detected by solid phase microextraction combined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results showed that both volatile absorbent and abrasive of Ficus microcarpa leaves had obvious bacteriostatic effect on Staphylococcus aureus, and the bacteriostatic effect was positively correlated with the biomass of leaves. The bacteriostatic effect of new leaves was higher than that of old leaves. The effective bacteriostatic components in leaves were mainly hexenal and hexenol, and the different proportion of these two organic substances might cause the different bacteriostatic effect between new and old leaves. This study has confirmed the bacteriostatic activity of volatiles from Ficus microcarpa leaves, and provided theoretical basis for the development and promotion of bacteriostatic effect of Ficus microcarpa.
